The earliest "recorded" Lewis in Marion County is Solomon Lewis, arriving in the late 1730s or early 1740s, coming from the present-day area of Town Creek, Brunswick County, NC. Solomon's younger cousin, William Lewis, arrived in the late 1760s from Bertie County, NC, with his wife Mourning Van Pelt and two children and settled in Horry County. Many of this William Lewis's children moved into Marion County. Solomon and William established a dynasty of Lewises in both Marion County and Horry County, South Carolina that continues today. Some moved on "south and west" as was so popular in the early 1800s. | |
