The Descendents of William Lewis
and Mourning Van Pelt |
| William Lewis of Hertford, NC was born in 1740
and married Mourning Van Pelt of Bertie, NC circa 1764. About
1768, William and Mourning moved to what is present-day Horry
County, South Carolina, with their two young children, William,
Jr. and Mary (Polly). They proceeded to acquire farmlands and
to produce more children, some that remained in Horry County,
some that moved on to Marion County, and some that moved on to
Alabama and Mississippi. William Lewis died in August, 1811.

| A descendent of this William Lewis, Mary Lewis
Stevenson, published a book entitled, "William Lewis of
Horry County, South Carolina" in 1960, printed by The R.L.
Bryan Company of Columbia, SC. The Author's research into this
family was performed independently of Ms. Stevenson's book. The
descendents of this family owe a gigantic debt of gratitude to
Ms. Mary Lewis Stevenson for her excellent effort. The Author
finally obtained a copy of Ms. Stevenson's book in December 1999
and has cross-checked his independent research with the work
of Ms. Stevenson - and found only minor differences between the
two researches. |
