Jerry was born in Wilmington, NC (New Hanover County), but considers Brunswick County home since he lived in Bolivia as a teenager, and returned later with his family and settled there. As an engineering graduate from NC State College (now University), Jerry went to work for Western Electric in Burlington, NC (Alamance County), then on to Winston-Salem, NC (Forsyth County), where he designed and patented various electronic equipment for Western Electric. He later moved his family back to Brunswick County and became very active in county politics and established his own engineering firm.
