Jeremiah Lewis

Jeremiah Lewis was the son of Thomas Lewis of Anson Co., NC. He was named in his father's will, written in 1817/18 and probated c. 1836 in Anson County, NC. The will stated he was a desceased son but left heirs, unfortunately unnamed. From the 1810 census records they seemed to have lived with their grandfather. We find in later census and deed records these names not fully identified George J. and Robert, who both left descendents in Anson County, NC. George J. is not found in the Anson County censues, but he made a deed for Anson Co., property from his home in Perry County, AL in the 1840s.

Jeremiah Lewis became a minister at about the age of 18-20 years old, and he preached in Chesterfield County, SC at the Deep Creek Baptist Church. After his death in 1808/1809, the church was disbanded and in 1812 was reorganized in southern Anson Co., NC, near the state border under a Mr. Gulledge. There is a large cemetery on the church ground with many Gulledge tombstones. Because of his youth, Jeremiah kept no church records, which is another bad blow for finding family history in the area. When the new church was reorganized, the very first page mentioned that no records were kept and that Jeremiah was deceased. A new church was built on the ground and still exists today. Jeremiah's father, Thomas, and his second wife were long time members of the new church. Jeremiah's sister, Jane, married Richard Graves and they too were long time members before his death c.1830.

Jeremiah was named for his grandfather, who died testate in 1796. He also signed his grandfather's will as a jurat. Jeremiah, the grandfather, and his wife Sarah (last name unknown) came to Anson County, NC c.1786 from Granville Co., NC. To date, researchers have been unable to trace this Lewis family any further back.

This information provided in March, 2004 by Ms. Frances I. Etheredge. Thank you for helping me to learn that this Jeremiah Lewis is not connected to any of the Lewis families I'm tracking - I didn't think he was, but he did show up as a landowner in Bladen County, NC in 1799.
