Jean Louis

Jean Louis was born in Pezenas, Herault, Languedoc, France - according to records found in the LDS (Mormon) Church "FamilySearch.Com" website. Pezenas is a small town near the Mediterranean Coast about 100 miles east of Marseille, France, and almost 75 miles north-northeast of the French/Spanish border at the Meditteranean Sea.

Allegedly, Jean Louis was living in Noviant, Meurth-et-Moselle, France when he and his sons fled from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1687. According to the records found in the FamilySearch.Com website, his second son, also named Jean Louis, was allegedly born in Noviant, Meurth-et-Moselle in 1680. The Author believes that Jean Louis, the son, was born well before 1680, probably closer to 1662-1665. Meurth-et-Moselle is a department within the Alsace-Lorraine region in the northeast corner of France. Noviant is not on any current maps, but the closest current towns are Metz and Nancy.

According to Mr. Claude S. Lewis, in his book entitled "William Lewis, Jr. of Black River, NC," Jean Louis and his family had lived in France for "several generations," originally coming to France from Wales. When Jean Louis and his family left France they fled to Radnorshire, Wales - indicating that this is the region of Wales that their family had left "several generations" before.

Well, "several generations" could mean one, two, three or more generations, making it very difficult to ascertain who were the ancestors of Jean Louis. But, going back to Radnorshire, Wales does provide some excellent clues. Further research is needed in Radnorshire (now called Powys County) in Wales to determine the lineage of this family.

Another large Lewis family within this website seems to have originated in Herefordshire, England. Incredibly, Herefordshire, England is just across the border from Radnorshire, Wales (Powys County, now). Based on similar names and migration patterns, the Author is convinced that these two Lewis families are somehow related to each other - but the connection must exist back in the 1500s - a timeframe that is difficult to research.
