George Lewis moved to Richmond County, Georgia as a very young man and enlisted in the Revolutionary War in that county in 1779. He is claimed to have lived in Burke County, Georgia in 1783. He moved his family to Washington County then Bullock County, GA. In 1818, he moved his family to Tattnall County, Georgia and remained until his death in 1844. There is little evidence that this George Lewis's father was James Lewis, but most researchers believe that the mention of James Lewis would be to a brother and not a father. In 2010, recent evidence strongly indicates that George Lewis is most likely the son of William Lewis - the younger brother of Josiah Lewis and Samuel Lewis - all three sons of William Lewis from "upper NC" (the Bertie/Chowan area). |
