In researching the Lewis families found in this website, the Author has uncovered many folks that have simply "disappeared" from this area - at various times in history, but mostly in the late 1700s and early 1800s. The Author merely assumed that these folks simply went south and west and were just lost to time - either because they were estranged from families due to squabbles, perhaps "outlaws and brigands," or who knows what else happened? In November 2006, Mr. David J. Webb offered a scenario that I had never really considered, and it started me thinking "how many other branches are perhaps lost due to something we'd never entertain today as acceptable?" I was truly not aware that "marrying an Indian" during specific times in our collective history would lead so many people away from their families - not just temporarily, but for decades and even centuries. Nor was I aware that this "simple act" would lead to so much pain and so many years of actually denying their past - who they were, where they came from, or who their "real" family is/was. Mr. Webb has granted permission to attach his research to this site, and I have chosen to put it here among other Robeson County, NC items because in my mind this is where I hope to do it proper justice. He has tracked many of his ancestors to Robeson County (and other places, but those locations are outside of "my neck of the woods"), and the attached MS Word Document really tells it all. I sincerely hope that folks will find this information, think about it, and perhaps open up with their stories and share their history and genealogy information with the rest of the world. Yes, some of our collective past is "less than pleasant" but if we merely bury it then we're doing ourselves a great injustice. Thank you Mr. Webb. Click on the link below to open an MS Word Document, with photos and great narrative. If anyone has similar information they would like to see in this site, please contact me. Currently, Mr. Webb is updating this document and it will return soon. |
